Here at Econo Air, our team is committed to staying up to date on the latest trends, advancements, and regulations in the HVAC industry to ensure you receive the premium-quality service you deserve. The Department of Energy (DOE) has recently released new regulatory requirements for split-systems and packaged units. Econo Air is here to help you better understand the changes to come and keep you informed on how our team is adapting and innovating to adhere to the latest requirements.

What Is the Change?

As of January 1st, 2023, the DOE will be implementing new requirements for efficiency standards as well as changes to the efficiency rating rest procedure known as the “M1 Standard.” Systems affected by these updates include split-system air conditioners, split-system heat pumps, single-packaged air conditioners, and single-packaged heat pumps. The way in which these new standards and regulations are to be implemented varies by region and product type.

More Stringent Testing to Come

In 2023, manufacturers are required to adhere to more stringent testing for reporting efficiency ratings. They are required to re-test their equipment using the new efficiency rating test requirements (the M1 standard). Additionally, they must publish the efficiency ratings using new efficiency metrics (SEER2, EER2, and HSPF2).

The new testing requirements are intended to better reflect field conditions and provide a more representative heating load line for heat pumps.
